This past week, I was the Picture Presenter for Paige's 2nd grade class. I taught them about Grant Wood's "American Gothic."
Sometimes it can be a real challenge to come up with lesson activities to go with the artwork especiallly when you have no supplies to work with. This one however, was pretty fun and more exciting for the kids because the original painting resides in Chicago---so if they wanted they could actually go see it. I had the kids draw their own version of American Gothic by doing a parody. They basically replaced the main characters with something else. We had Darth Vader and Yoda holding a light sabre, Disney Princesses, and Spongebob and Patrick, etc.
I share this story because 2nd graders are just so cute and say the best things. Here are two of my favorites:
1-As we were describing the people and the details in the original painting, I asked the kids to describe the clothing. Someone raised their hand and said, "they are wearing old-fashioned clothes, like what people wore in the '80s."
2-When I asked the kids if they had heard of the word "Gothic" and knew what it meant. One savvy little 2nd grader said, "it's when you wear all black clothes and lots of dark make-up."
Of course, the best part of 2nd grade is seeing Paige. She is so excited when I come, she immediately jumps out of her seat to come give me a big hug. In fact she hugs me a lot, sometimes I have to tell her to go back to her seat, but that's okay her teacher doesn't mind and neither do I.
