Christmas Plans

We had planned to stay at home this Christmas, but changed our plans at the last minute.

Dave's Grandpa, Grandpa Church, had a stroke in November and his health was very precarious. He is 92 years old. Unfortunately, Grandpa was not able to go home after he was discharged from the hospital because of the level of care he needed. Eventually, a place was was found for him at a brand new Veteran's Home, that was in his same city.

Although he was stable there were definitely some lasting effects from the stroke and everyone was very worried about him.

Everyone that knows Grandpa Church loves him, including me and Dave. Dave has a special relationship with Grandpa. I love to hear the stories from Dave's childhood about all the wonderful things he did with Grandpa. One of my favorites is how Grandpa would let Dave, as a little boy, back the car out of the driveway.

Anyway, as Thanksgiving passed and our focus turned to Christmas, Dave and I just felt we needed to go to Utah and see Grandpa. Fortunately we gots lots of encouragement from Dave's mom, whose wise counsel helped us to decide what to do. It's hard to be away from family during the holidays and we love Grandpa so much that in the end it was an easy decision to make.

So after wrapping up a few loose ends around home, we pulled the kids put of school a few days early and headed to Utah. The girls and I left mid-month (Dave came later), so we didn't even put up the Christmas tree. I felt a teeny bit bad about that so I let Paige decorate a mini-tree instead.
