Christmastime Summary

We had such a great time in Utah.  I love to spend holidays with family.  I love to see our girls play with cousins, talk with Aunts and Uncles and hug their grandparents.  I know these times will be special memories my girls have of their childhoods.

Here is a recap of some of the things we did:

Family get-to-together at the Holts
Our first order of business was visit to our cousins!

Paige and Grandma made lots of cookies for the residents
at the veterans home

Shopping and writing letters to Santa
Elf on the Shelf.  Oh my, I was really hoping to avoid this fad altogether.  Unfortunately, Paige has a close friend who told her all about the Elf on the Shelf.  They even went so far as to write a letter to Santa asking him to send Paige an Elf on the Shelf.  My fate was sealed when another friend bought Paige an Elf for her birthday.  So this Christmas season, we had Candy Cane, our Elf on the Shelf, with us.  She turned up in all kinds of places.  She even came to Utah with us and ended up in really high places like on the ceiling fan!

A new tradition in Dave's family is Christmas BINGO.  All the Smith siblings and their families get together for a rousing game of BINGO, food and prizes.  This is only the second time we have been in town for the party.  It was a very fun, the girls loved it.  Plus everyone leaves happy because everyone is a winner multiple times!

Paige also won Grandpa Church's roadster music box.  She
was so happy to have something of Grandpa's

Grandpa and Grandma Smith treated all the girls and grandkids to a Santa Claus Symphony at Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City.  It was a fun performance just perfect for kids.  After the show, we went to the City Creek Center for lunch.  What a great day of riding Trax, listening to beautiful music, eating, and playing with cousins.
waiting outside for Trax. It was windy cold, so there were
lots of intense faces!

Once we were on the train, the smiles came out

This was my fortune at lunch time!  Yikes!  No one wants this
one at Christmastime

The girls also got some piano practice in.  First with some friends of Aunt Katie and Uncle Scott Smith.  Paige and Ashley also brought the music they have been working on for a Christmas piano recital so they could share their talents at the Smith Family Christmas Eve Party.  The nice thing about Dave's family is that there are so many gifted pianists and singers, that the girls get immersed in music, a nice change of pace from their musically-challenged parents.

Just Dance - that counts as music too

We also had some good meals with Grandpa and Grandma Smith
Lunch at Roosters

We also spent some time with my family too.  The first thing we did when we went to visit with my dad, besides eating :), was to help set him up on Facebook.  All his family from Thailand are on so it was time to get him on.  Technology is new to my dad and he is a very slow typist, so I tried to make everything as easy as possible.  Fortunately, it seems to be working!  He is figuring it out and has even started posting status updates!  Way to go dad.

We also got together with my sister Becky's family and my mom's brother's family, the Gibbs - Uncle Wade, Aunt Lynn, their kids Colin and Amy, and their grandkids.  Becky hosted a dinner at her house. It was fun to see everyone again.

Last of all, we finally did get some snow!

Christmas Travels

It seems like you can't do the "family travel" thing without a little drama.  The girls and I flew to Utah together.  We left earlier in the month so we could get a cheaper flight.  Dave couldn't quite take that many days off, so he came a few days later.

Now, despite what you are about to read, we actually had a wonderful visit in Utah.  The "travel" part was the big challenge.

So let's begin with Dave dropping us off at O'Hare airport.  We were not checking bags so the girls and I each had a carry-on as well as backpack/purse.  That's a lot of stuff to navigate with two kids through an airport, but I told Dave not to worry about coming in with us, we were fine.

Well, the fun started as we got in line to go through security.  Paige, Ashley and I are all just standing there, when all of a sudden Paige tells me she is hot.  Then she says in a panicked voice, "I feel sick."  Then she basically collapses in my arms all hot, sweaty and green in the face.

Now I know I am in trouble.  We are in the security line, no water, no nearby bathrooms, no where to go.  Then Paige starts throwing up.  She had a skirt on, so I lifted it up to form a basket for her to throw up in.  Fortunately, another passenger grabs an empty bin that you put your stuff in to go through the conveyor belt and she throws up in that.  I just want you to know that this was not discreet.  Paige is retching and crying loudly.  It was bad.  On top of it all, she had a green smoothie for breakfast so her vomit was pretty much "Exorcist" green, but even after that was all up, she just kept dry heaving, it was sad.

She was so weak after throwing up she could hardly stand.  And of course, we can't leave our luggage unattended and of course, the nearest restroom is across the terminal.  Fortunately, I had Ashley with me.  She stayed with our luggage by security while I took Paige to the bathroom and cleaned her up.

Now I had a decision to make, do we go back home and miss our flight or do I keep going with Paige?  I sort of felt like she may have been hot (with her coat on) and a little car sick from the drive so we decided to go ahead and go through security.  (I'm sure they were happy to get rid of me!) Then once through security I could buy some water, sit Paige down and figure out if she was well enough to travel.

We had an hour before our flight was supposed to leave and pretty much from that point on, Paige seemed okay.  So I decided to go for it.  We boarded our flight to Denver where we would then change planes for SLC.  We were almost in Denver when, Paige turned to me again and said, "Mom, I feel sick."  Again, she threw up and again there was no place to go and no way to be discreet.  So in the middle of a packed airplane, Paige threw up into a barf bag and all the passengers got to enjoy the sounds and smells.

This occurred right as we were descending to land, so Paige was still pretty sick when we touched down.  Unfortunately, we had no time to lose because we had to make a connection very quickly.  Basically, we only had enough time to get off our plane, dash across the terminal and get on the next plane.  Again, Ashley was the lifesaver, because Paige was too weak to roll her bags, heck she could barely even walk.  I'm sure we were a sad sight.  Ashley and I struggling with roller bags and backpacks with Paige stumbling between us holding a giant barf bag and green as could be.  We barely made our connection and the new flight attendants took one look at Paige and said, "uh, oh have we  been airsick?"

At this point, Paige is starting to feel a little better and it finally hit me that she might have motion sickness.  It's not like I haven't seen it a million times before with Ashley.  This is when I decided to give Paige some Dramamine and pray that we could get to Utah without any more throwing up.  AND....it worked!  She was fine the rest of the way.

Now I'm going to skip forward to our return flight.  I was prepared this time and my kids were medicated with Dramamine.  We had an evening flight, again with a connection in Denver.  Dave left a few hours earlier on a different flight, but Dave's parents dropped the girls and I off and we wait for our flight.  Then it happens, our flight is delayed.  I realize that if we are late to Denver we will miss our connection and our flight from Denver is the last of the night, which means we will be stuck overnight.  So, I tell the gate agent that if there is any chance I might miss the connection, I'm not going.  Fortunately, she agrees with me and rebooks us for a flight the next day.  Unfortunately, I have to call Dave's parents to come back and pick us up.  I feel bad about this because I know that Dave's mom who is sick has probably already stripped and washed the sheets on our beds (and she had.)  So, once again the girls and I are dragging our stuff all over the airport, but we did go back to Grandpa and Grandma's for a good's night sleep.  And, I luckily we got out no problems the next morning, but whew what an adventure!

Christmas Plans

We had planned to stay at home this Christmas, but changed our plans at the last minute.

Dave's Grandpa, Grandpa Church, had a stroke in November and his health was very precarious. He is 92 years old. Unfortunately, Grandpa was not able to go home after he was discharged from the hospital because of the level of care he needed. Eventually, a place was was found for him at a brand new Veteran's Home, that was in his same city.

Although he was stable there were definitely some lasting effects from the stroke and everyone was very worried about him.

Everyone that knows Grandpa Church loves him, including me and Dave. Dave has a special relationship with Grandpa. I love to hear the stories from Dave's childhood about all the wonderful things he did with Grandpa. One of my favorites is how Grandpa would let Dave, as a little boy, back the car out of the driveway.

Anyway, as Thanksgiving passed and our focus turned to Christmas, Dave and I just felt we needed to go to Utah and see Grandpa. Fortunately we gots lots of encouragement from Dave's mom, whose wise counsel helped us to decide what to do. It's hard to be away from family during the holidays and we love Grandpa so much that in the end it was an easy decision to make.

So after wrapping up a few loose ends around home, we pulled the kids put of school a few days early and headed to Utah. The girls and I left mid-month (Dave came later), so we didn't even put up the Christmas tree. I felt a teeny bit bad about that so I let Paige decorate a mini-tree instead.

School Play - The Comic Book Artist

Ashley auditioned for the school play again this year and she made it! The play was called, "The Comic Book Artist" and was about a comics artist whose characters come to life and have a battle of good versus evil.

Ashley was cast as one of the superheroes. She was Blossom, who had a magical flower that could put you to sleep. One of her actual lines for the play was, "want a whiff of my magical flower?" Gotta love that.

Any-who, it was actually a really cute play, funny and entertaining. The whole cast did a great job!

Young Women

At church, I am the president of the Young Women's group.  I have been doing this for about a year.  It keeps me very busy, but we do do lots of great things.  And I get to spend some time with and learn from a really wonderful bunch of girls...including my own daughter Ashley!

Here is just a small sampling of some of the stuff we did in November and December:
1-  Goofing around in class.  How can you not love these girls?!

 2.  Costume Dance - I helped the youth to plan and host a costume party/dance.  It was a big undertaking but fortunately the youth took on most of the work.

3.  Young Women In Excellence - a yearly event to recognize what the young women have accomplished

4.  Hand-made Christmas ornaments for decorating Christmas Trees in our church foyers.  These turned out sooo cute!

5.  "Share the Spirit" Christmas Service Project.  We volunteered at a local agency to help distribute Christmas gifts and goods to people in need.  A fabulous opportunity.

6.  Gingerbread house decorating and Christmas Party

7.  Compiling Christmas Care packages for missionaries and military service men and women.

New Job

After 10 years at Deloitte, Dave left to pursue a new opportunity.  He is basically in the same field but with another firm and in their financial services rather than multi-state tax group.  This group is expanding their practice to include Dave's area of specialty so he and another guy he knows from Deloitte are moving over to get it started.

It's a big change to leave after having spent a decade working for Deloitte.  They have also been very good to him recently and he has some professional relationships that are hard to leave behind, but he felt like this new job provided him with a good career opportunity.  Dave has been on a two year rotation that was coming to an end and so even if he stayed with Deloitte, he would have had to transition to something else.  If you have to make a change, you might as well go big.

We both feel really good about this new job and Dave's decision, so hopefully everything will go well.  One thing we do know for sure is that he will be a lot busier than he has been for the last two years.  It is going to be a little bit of a rude awakening for me---I have gotten used to having him around a lot---but I also know we will be okay as we adjust.  It's just how life is.

Dave started his new job mid-November just in time for the company holiday party.  This was new because Deloitte stopped holding Christmas parties about 5 or so years ago.  The party was held at the Museum of Science and Industry.  We had a good time, enjoyed wandering around the museum and eating yummy food.  Fortunately, we were able to meet up with the other guy who started with Dave and the two partners who interviewed him.  Other than that, we really didn't know anyone as Dave had only been an employee for about 2 weeks!

The Nutcracker

Paige made her dance stage debut in the Nutcracker. It's been a pretty big project, with auditions, rehearsals, costume fittings, make-up, and pictures consuming our time throughout the Fall.

Backstage, ready to go on
The show finally arrived the first week of December. I wasn't sure what to expect for a local production with a cast of kids, but we were pleasantly surprised. The show was actually very good and the production value was pretty high. I was blown away by the costumes and scenery. They were great!
The whole cast at dress rehearsal

Of course, the best part was watching Paige, she loved it so much. She was in two scenes - the battle scene as a mouse and in the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy as one of the flowers.
Can you find my little star?!
The mice and soldiers from the battle

On opening night, the Edrosa's gave Paige and Riley a little Nutcracker. On closing night, we gave the girls flowers. I definitely think they felt like stars!

The captivated audience
Paige already wants to do it again next year, so this may become a holiday tradition, at least until she loses interest!

Our only hiccup was that Paige had an allergic reaction to the tons of makeup she had to wear, so on the second night she had to go without. It didn't really matter though, her face was so red because of the allergic rash it was like wearing makeup!
